Yoga Treatment for Hearing Loss

Did you know, Yoga can help people with hearing loss? Our ear nerves should receive an excellent blood supply for them to function well. The nerves and blood vessels that supply blood to the ears go through or across the neck. Due to hectic lifestyles, our neck can lose its flexibility, restricting the supply of blood from nerves to the ears. We can offer the neck a good workout by practicing different yoga postures and this can subsequently improve hearing.

Diabetes, high blood pressure and use of painkillers are the risk factors of hearing loss. Majority of ear problems are caused by long term cold and cough; besides age-related hearing loss, unattended ear infections, ear injury or circulatory system disorder, and listening to music for a long period are found to cause hearing loss. As per World Health Organization’s estimation, 360 million individuals in the world have disabling hearing loss, of which 91% are adults and 9% are children. Hearing loss or Tinnitus, effects 1 out of 5 people.

Common causes of hearing loss:

Very loud noise – if you listen to loud noise, consider being mild. Listening to loud noise for long period can damage hair cells in the inner ear. Music can be noise if this is loud and irritating to eardrum. Explosive sounds can cause sudden loss of hearing called acoustic trauma.

Buildup of Earwax – can block the ear canal and prevent conduction of sound wave. Removal of earwax is the solution. Please note, prevention is better than cure.

Medications – such as antibiotic gentamicin, certain chemotherapy drugs, high doses of aspirin, other pain relievers, antimalarial drugs or loop diuretics, can damage inner ear and cause hearing loss.

Ear infection and abnormal bone growths or tumors – in the outer or middle ear can lead to hearing loss. Don’t ignore, sooner you visit the ENT specialist, the better!

Autoimmune inner ear disease – can cause sudden-onset hearing loss; swift medical treatment can reduce this type of hearing loss.

Physical head injury – that lead to traumic brain injury (TBI) and skull fractures, can be a cause of hearing loss by creating hole in the eardrum, and damaging the middle ear structure.

Yoga Postures that help prevent hearing loss

Trikonasana – sends a gush of fresh blood to head and neck when the head hangs on one side. This relaxes the muscles and we can instantly feel our ears pop or open up reducing or completely halting the ringing sound.

Padangusthansana – relaxes our being clearing the toxins in head and neck. Flow of blood to the head clears out all the blocks in your ears, nose, and throat refreshing and energizing the practitioner.

Adho Mukha Svanasana – oxygenates ears, nose and throat while lengthening the spine and strengthening the whole body. Blood circulation enhanced throughout the body reduces cholesterol and clears toxins.

Ustrasana – increases blood flow to head and neck clearing blocks in throat chakra and subsequently helping reduce ear problem. This yoga pose is extremely beneficial for the throat and the heart chakras.

Gomukhasana – works on throat chakra and reduces pain and sounds in the ear. This position leads to physical relaxation by enhancing blood circulation. Reduction of cholesterol and better concentration are added benefits.

Bhujangasana – increases flow of fresh and clean blood to chest and throat removing toxins and energy blocks. This reduces sound, benefits ears and helps on concentration.

Viparita Karani – promotes blood (and oxygen) circulation throughout the body, works on throat chakra and relives stress.

Matsyasana – works on throat chakra, sends blood to brain, ears and relieves stress.

Acupressure for hearing loss

Begin with your right foot; locate acupoint Forceful Torrent (KID – 3) in the depression between the inner anklebone and the Achilles tendon. Apply steady pressure to this acupoint with your right thumb until you feel soreness and hold for two minutes. Relax. Repeat this on your left foot. Slightly open your mouth, a depression is formed, now locate acupoint Listening Palace (SI – 19) just in front of the right ear canal. Apply steady pressure to this acupoint with your index or middle finger until you feel soreness and hold for two minutes. Relax. Repeat this on your left side.


Homemade recipes to help reduce hearing loss

Ingredients to add to our diet are ginger, garlic, apple cider, table salt, onion.
Ginger –Add one heaping tablespoon each of cilantro, dried oregano, sage, rosemary and cinnamon to four glasses of water. Put three pieces of ginger on it. Keep for at least 15 minutes. Pressure cook the mixture. Take daily three glasses of this mixture for minimum three weeks.

Garlic – Macerate 100 grams of wine and 400 grams of alcohol in wine and take a half teaspoon of the mixture daily just before bed. Best will be to take a raw garlic daily in your salad.

Apple Cider – Thrice daily, before the main meals, take a glass of water, mix one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and one teaspoon of honey in it and consume. If there is heartburn, reduce the quantity of apple cider vinegar.

Table Salt – Warm one cup of salt for four minutes, pour onto a cotton cloth, tie it tightly making a circular leak proof poultice. Give the troubled ear a warm massage by positioning it for 10 minutes in good consequences. You should repeat this procedure daily for at least a week.

Onion – Macerate 300 gram onion and mix with one liter of water. Keep for at least 12 hours and consume three glasses in a day.

Ghee – Mix thoroughly a teaspoon of ghee with a cupful of milk. Drink it daily.

Neem Leaves – Boil neem leaves and/ or bark in water and clean your ear with the warm water.

Fenugreek Seeds & Bitter almond – Put grinded fenugreek seeds in hot oil. Filter the preparation and put a few drops in the affected ear when it is bearably warm. Bitter almond can be prepared with water the same way and used when it is lukewarm.

Pineapple –Consume fresh pineapple or pineapple juice daily.

Avoid

Antibiotics like aminoglycosides, gentamicin, and tobramicin usually cause temporary and occasionally permanent hearing loss. Consult your physician.

Aspirin overuse causes acute hearing loss.

Some diuretics like furosemide (Lasix) if used in high dose and some anti-hypertensive drugs like bisoprolol and hydro-chlorothiazide can cause hearing loss. Consult your physician.

Loud Noise is one of the major reasons of hearing loss. Wear earplugs to concerts and turn down the volume of television or other electronic equipments.
